Classroom Packet Pick-up --Mark your calendars!
Instructional materials aka “packets” are available for pick-up every two weeks. Completed packets can be turned back in when you collect the new packets. Make sure your child’s name and teacher is on the packet. Drive to the Bus Loading Zone to pick up items on these days and times.

Science Fair: ‘Race into Action: Taking Care of Our Natural World’
Coming January 20-21, 2021 is the CES Virtual Science and Engineering Fair!
Classroom teachers will have asynchronous videos planned for these two days and synchronous discussions and activities that week for all K-5 students! In addition to the learning we will do together, all students are encouraged to do a fun science project, experiment or engineering demonstration that will be shared on Flipgrid this year (upload any time before January 20th).

Battle of the Books
We are very excited to offer a Virtual Battle of the Books for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students choosing to participate this year. This is a lively reading incentive program used to encourage reading, broaden student interests, increase reading comprehension, and practice cooperative skills. It is also just a lot of fun!
I am excited to share that we have 116 students who chose to participate this year! This year’s Battle of the Books titles were introduced the first week in December and will conclude with the Battle of Books Championship in March. Students meet virtually over Zoom on Mondays to plan, practice and discuss books. We will begin practice rounds in February and the finals will take place the first few weeks of March.
Students participating in the Battle of the Books can find more information in their library schoology course. We are very proud of these students and look forward to working with them over the next few months!
2020-2021 Enrollment Forms
We still have over 109 students that have not completed or turned in their Enrollment Forms. For those families, we have mailed home another copy of the forms. Return the paper copies to the school office or go online and complete these same forms. The 2020-21 Online Enrollment Forms are located in your Skyward Family Access if you would like to complete them online. When you open Family Access the link to the forms are on the left side. Complete the online forms using a computer or laptop; Skyward’s mobile phone app does not have the ability to complete these forms. Thank you for updating your child’s information or returning the forms.
Families Please Complete the Hybrid or Distant Learning Survey – Grades 1-5
Centennial families please go to your Family Access account and complete the survey regarding your choice for your child to return to school. Thank you to the families that have already completed this. We need your feedback so we have information to help us determine our staffing needs. Complete the survey on either a computer or laptop; Skyward’s mobile phone app does not have the ability to complete these forms. If you need help, call the school office at 360-596-8300 and staff will help you complete the survey.
Wellness Screening
Parents will need to complete the Wellness Screening process daily (in Skyward) for your child before they start in person school. A few families have started to complete the short questionnaire. Thank you for getting in the habit now. After you complete the questionnaire remember to click submit. Do this prior to your child riding the bus or to coming to school when we get ready to start in person at school. Additionally, now have a temperature scanner kiosk in the front entry of our school as an added safety feature.
School Board Appreciation Month
January is Board Recognition month. This dedicated group works tirelessly to ensure a quality education for all of our students in the Olympia School District.
These elected citizens set District goals and policies, adopt the budget, place tax levies and bond issues on the ballot, hire personnel including the Superintendent, and ensure the necessary facilities for the education of our community’s youth. Our board members are: Hilary Seidel, Scott Clifthorne, Maria Flores, Justin McKaughan, Leslie Huff, Isabel McClatchey and Rebecca McMillin-Hastings Student Representatives.
We thank you for all of your contributions to our schools, our students and our community!
Attendance Line – calling in absences
Reminder to call the Attendance Line at 596-8303 to report any absences or late arrivals. The office needs to know as soon as possible. This is a 24-hour recording phone line. Please feel free to call this number at any time that you are aware that your child will be absent.
Thurston County Food Bank Food Drive
Thank you Centennial families for your generous donations to the food drive in December. We collected over 60 boxes of food that went to our local food bank. Thank you, thank you.
CES Library Books
Books to Go – Your, to-go library service! Visit Mrs. Slater’s Schoology page under “Books to Go”.

Books need to be placed on hold. See the Books to Go link above to walk you through the process. When the books are ready for pick up, an email will be sent to you with the date you can pick them up. Walk around to the back of the school to the backdoor entrance of the library, to pick up your books. The library back door is across from the three portables, behind the school.
Real-life Math
When your child closes his math book, the learning doesn’t have to end. Try these suggestions for fitting math skills into everyday activities:
· Appoint your child scorekeeper for family games. He can practice doing math in his head by adding up points for Yahtzee, Scrabble, or Hearts.
· At the grocery store, ask your youngster to estimate 2 lb. of green beans or 3 lb. of potatoes. Then, let him check the weights on the produce scale.
· How much space does he need for a jigsaw puzzle? Have him look at the dimensions on the box (say, 18” x 24”) and use a ruler or yardstick to find a spot that’s at least 18” wide and 24” long.
· How long will it take to fold a load of laundry or drive to the bank? Suggest that he write down his estimate and then time the task on a cell phone or car clock.
· When you bake, put your youngster in charge of measuring ingredients (1 cup milk, ½ tsp. salt) and finding the right sized pan (11” x 7”, 13”x9”). Home & School Connection, January 2012
