                   Centennial Elementary School

Shannon Ritter, Principal                                                                                                  August 2018

Welcome back everyone!  I am so excited to see you all and hear about your summer adventures.  This newsletter is packed with tons of important information.  Grab your coffee, get cozy and happy reading.

Construction Update

It has been a busy summer at Centennial. The mini building is close to completion and teachers in grades 4 and 5 will set up their classrooms at the end of August.  What a beautiful space! The main entrance, office area, health room, resource rooms and offices attached to the main hall are still under construction and are anticipated to be ready by late September. The library should be ready by late November and the area known as Pod A, is currently underway. Construction has begun on the second gym and new play shed as well.

Navigating the School

Please look for signage to direct you to your destination.  Please stay out of all construction areas including areas that are fenced off. Classrooms located in Pod B, Pod C, the Mini Building (D-1 to D-15) and the portables can be entered by walking around the school on the sidewalks. Classroom teachers will explain to students the safe, new way to walk to the playground, cafeteria, office, resource rooms, music room, library, health room and gym. Routes will change throughout the year based on construction phasing.  See table showing locations of classroom teachers on page 4.

As of August 14th, the school office will be located on the first floor of the Mini Building. Follow the signs to room D-6 on the first floor.  The Health Room will also be located in the Mini Building in Room D-5 on the first floor, across from the temporary office.

Student Placement

Information on your child’s teacher for 2018-19 went home in their June report card. You can also find this information on your child’s Skyward – Family Access account. The staff has done an excellent job of assuring that we have balanced classes.

In the event that you have questions or problems regarding your Family Access account, contact the Student Information Office at 360-596-6150 or you can e-mail them. If you forgot your password or feel it has been compromised, let them know and a new one will be issued or call the school office and we will see if we can re-send the password.

Back to School – September Paperwork

Fall paperwork will be available at the Welcome Back to School Open House.  Your child’s teacher will have a packet of forms for you to complete. This will allow us to have the most current up to date information on your child and family. Some of the forms are for you to keep/read and several need to be completed and returned to the school immediately.

First Day of School

The plan as of now :) On Wednesday, September 5, students will meet their teacher on the playground blacktop between 8:50 – 9:00 A.M. Teachers will be holding signs with their name, for easy recognition.  Students in grades 1-5 will then proceed to the gym for a short morning Welcome Back to School Assembly.  If any changes are needed due to construction, we will get the word out as soon as we can.

Centennial’s kindergarten student’s first day of school will be September 10th. Our kindergarten families have already received a notification about the date and time of their September conference with their teacher. If you do not remember your appointment, call the school office at 596-8300.

Student Pick-up

Families, please complete the Afterschool Arrangements Form (in the packet your teacher will give you) and return to the school/teacher immediately.  We need to have a clear understanding how your child is going home the first week and for the school year.

Parents that are picking up their child at the end of the day can park their car in one of the parking lots and meet their child out front by the flagpole (see signs) or stay in your car and drive up to the “striped” area and pick up your child.  (Think “Drive Thru”) Just a reminder not to park or pull into the BUS LOADING area (staff is parking in the grass area) or the private driveway.  This is a safety issue.

Parking Lot

The parent/visitor parking lot behind Portables 6 & 7 is still not available due to the construction of the mini building. Parking in this area should be available by mid-September. General parking will be limited this year. Construction workers park off site when school is in session. Staff will be parking in other areas so some parent/visitor parking can be found in the main lot.

Please have your children use the buses, if at all possible. Please consider carpooling if you must drive your student to school. Do not enter the bus loading zone area with your vehicle to pick up or drop off your child, especially at the beginning and end of the school day. Also, the entrance to the school campus is very narrow and the buses cannot navigate this corner if there are vehicles stopped in the “do not block” signed areas.  If the buses cannot enter the campus this causes delays in our students being able to board their bus and being dropped at their bus stop at their designated time.

Credit Cards/Debit Cards

OSD does not charge a processing fee to our credit card users who make payments at the school buildings or online payments.

Student Handbook and Monthly Newsletters Online

Centennial’s Student Handbook will be available by mid-September online at centennial.osd.wednet.edu.  Centennial’s monthly newsletter is posted on the school’s website and sent to your email via Skyward-Message Center. If you need a hard copy let your child’s teacher know. Time sensitive Reminders/Flyers will continue to go home in your child’s backpack as needed.

The mini building will also automatically lock and a key pass will be needed to enter the mini building. We encourage all our students to get to school by 8:50 a.m. when the first bell rings so they are ready to start their school day.

Community Flier Distribution OSD posts all flyers electronically to the school district website. You can find approved flyers in the “Community” section at: https://osd.wednet.edu/community/flier_distribution. A few copies will be available on the counters for those families without internet.
