Recess Running Club

What is the Recess Running Club?

The Recess Running Club is a recess activity that the children can do individually or with friends. Students in all day kindergarten and grades 1 - 5, teachers, parents and adult visitors run or walk around the track located at the back of the school during recess. Mileage is recorded on lap sheets by students assigned on a rotating basis and by adult volunteers (7 laps=2miles=1 sheet). The Recess Running Club is operated by parent members of the Booster Club.

To walk or run 100 miles on Centennial's track by the end of the school year. Each child is given the opportunity to set a long-term goal, to reach 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 or more miles, and see it through completion. It is also our intention to promote a lifelong desire for health and fitness.

Students will count only those miles ran during recess, with the exception that one additional lap sheet may be posted per month for miles ran at times other that their recess, (for example, PE, Buddy Time, CISPUS preparation, etc.)

Teachers and adult runners will count only those miles run on Centennial's track during the school hours.

The Big Shoe will be awarded to the classroom with the most miles run each month.

This is how it works:

Teachers, or another designated person will post the student's lap sheets on the classroom wall chart. A member of the Recess Running Club Committee will come to each classroom to tally miles at the end of the month.

Runners/walkers will receive awards after achieving 10, 25, 50, 75, and finally a top reward at Recess Runnings. Awards will be given at the beginning of the following month. Students achieving at least 50 miles by the end of February will recieve a banana split on the designated day. At the end of the school year, an engraved medallion is awarded to each student that has completed 100 or more miles. In addition, students will receive a T-shirt during the month in which they achieve their goal.

During the school year, the Recess Running Club sponsors different activities on the track.
